Lip Function

You often hear advice to “relax your lips”, “don’t pull them too far to the side”, etc. etc.

This advice is not, in general, mistaken. However, after carefully observing lips during playing, I now think that it shouldn't be taken as gospel, either. Instead, each lip has its own function, which cannot be fulfilled if overly relaxed.

The function of the upper lip is to constrain and control the flow of air. It will curl down around the teeth, and should definitely not be pulled or stretched to the sides. It especially should not be very relaxed.

The lower lip should be more relaxed than the upper, for it will be pushed down and curled outward by the flow of air directed by the upper lip and hitting the wet part of the lower lip.

Keep this image in mind when you play and you will find yourself sounding better.
