22 March 2008 Experimenting with water textures

Yesterday at the park I got to borrow the tripod of the gods (link of interest to camera geeks only) and experimented with taking long-exposure pictures of running water. Here is a sequence of a stream taken at various exposures from four seconds to 1/8th of a second. I love how the texture changes.

(Of course, when you’re keeping the shutter open for so long it lets in an incredible amount of light, so if you’re shooting in broad daylight you have to compensate by putting an ND filter on your lens. This is essentially just an optically pure piece of nearly black glass.)

Update: I feel I should give credit to Zoe, who sat there stoically watching me the whole time, perhaps debating the pros and cons of having me as a father.
