30 March 2008 Now Categorizing by Lens

I’m now adding categories for what lens I’m using to take each picture with. I’ve gone back and added categories to a bunch of old posts, but have yet to finish the process.

30 March 2008 Genbo-deficient

This blog has been seriously lacking in Genbo lately.

30 March 2008 Deep Dark Urban Environment

In my Deep Dark Woods post of a few days ago I posted some nature shots of the wooded area near my house.

Here are a few urban shots, all taken in Kyoto.

25 March 2008 Deep Dark Woods

Today was a beautiful early spring day, and I was inspired to walk to go pick up Genbo and Zoe from daycare instead of the usual drive.

OK, that’s a lie. Maki accidentally brought our only surviving car key with her to work, so I was forced to walk. Was glad I did, though. Brought my favorite lens and had a nice leisurely picture-taking stroll to the daycare, grateful that we live where we do.

(The name of this post comes from what Genbo always calls anything from a clump of trees to a forest, an expression originating from a great children’s book.)

(After I snapped this picture, she looked up with this adorable “Me? You’re taking a picture of me? Why?” look on her face.)

24 March 2008 Kites

No, not the kind you fly on a string. These are black kites, a very common bird in Japan. Today they were wheeling and cavorting all over the Kamo river, where I went to enjoy a workless day.

There are lots of photographers dedicated to capturing solely BIF shots—birds in flight, that is. I tend to think these people are pretty weird, but then again I can see how it would get pretty fun, especially if you had one of these to devote to the task…

The crow got the hint and made himself scarce.

I had some fun with processing this one.

24 March 2008 Face of the Day

Unfortunately, I had been shooting walkers, so when this pretty girl whizzes by on a bicycle—hence the dramatically billowing hair—my shutter speed was way too low.

22 March 2008 Experimenting with water textures

Yesterday at the park I got to borrow the tripod of the gods (link of interest to camera geeks only) and experimented with taking long-exposure pictures of running water. Here is a sequence of a stream taken at various exposures from four seconds to 1/8th of a second. I love how the texture changes.

(Of course, when you’re keeping the shutter open for so long it lets in an incredible amount of light, so if you’re shooting in broad daylight you have to compensate by putting an ND filter on your lens. This is essentially just an optically pure piece of nearly black glass.)

Update: I feel I should give credit to Zoe, who sat there stoically watching me the whole time, perhaps debating the pros and cons of having me as a father.

22 March 2008 Camellia

Took this while off playing at the park yesterday. Due to the wonders of modern technology (vibration reduction) I was able to get a good shot off with a long lens while holding baby in one arm while she did her best to chew on my lens (a la this shot).

22 March 2008 Fun Day in the Park

We had a fun day in the park today. Read all about it here.
