So the wife ended her maternity leave, going back to her cushy job as a resident in internal medicine, leaving moi as the primary care-giver of one three year old and one seven month old. Oh yeah, I have to work, too!
It’s incredibly hectic, but I’m actually enjoying it all very much, in a masochistic I’m-sure-this-will-be-remembered-fondly-someday kind of way. However, it doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for much else. Hopefully I can put some of the incredible, mold-breaking photographs that I’ve been taking in my abundant spare time up here in a couple days.

Watching toddlers that young is a full-time job and a half! The only way I could manage to work, even at home, was to put them in hoikuen or daycare. The Japanese hoikuen system is wonderful. The girls recall hoikuen fondly even to this day. When will Genbo be old enough to go to hoikuen?

Oh, Genbo’s been in hoikuen (daycare) since he was 2 1/2 months old. Zoe started this week when Maki went back to work. We have a lot of serious issues with the hoikuen, which is very conservative and traditional and whose staff resemble mid-level bureaucrats more than anything else, but the teachers are good and most of what we don’t like about it doesn’t directly affect the kids.
Maki wakes up and leaves before we get up, so it’s my job to feed the kids, get them dressed and out the door to hoikuen, then work (and cook and clean) ’til they get home, at which time I feed them again and get them ready for bed, again usually without Maki.
It’s a good thing our closet came with a lock on the door, otherwise it would be so much harder to keep them in there while I do stuff. :)
