Zach awry in Japan

7 October 2007 CA of the Day

I talked here a little about how high contrast scenes at wide apertures can lead to chromatic aberration (CA). Here is one example, taken from a German restaurant with great beer at the south end of Lake Biwa, where I like the effect: No, they don’t have purple streetlights in Japan.

For his sake, I only wish the purple in that guy’s jacket was due to CA.

Clearly, the lens used to take that shot is defective. You should sell it or otherwise dispose of it, but good luck finding someone stupid enough to actually pay you good money to take it off your hands.

(I’m glad that’s not the Nikkor 85/1.4 that you sold me a few months ago ;-)

Indeed, Jeffrey, it should be obvious from the fact that the stone lanterns in your shot are not glowing purple that the lens I sold you is a different one.

    I love the 50mm 1.8 so I might also pick up the 85 prime… either the 1.8 or 1.4 I’m not sure.

I’ve heard that both are very nice. However, the 1.8 is very good at something like half the price of the 1.4, which is excellent. The 1.8 might save you money, or it might cost you more money than getting the 1.4 to begin with, since you might (people seem to) buy the 1.8 and then switch to the 1.4 later.

Here is an excellent thread comparing the two:
